Those who are lucky to stay at the Austrian capital in December should not miss strolling around on one of the numerous Christmas Markets.
Hot chestnuts, gingerbread and punch - Christmas Markets belong to Advent in Vienna just like the Giant Ferris Wheel belongs to the Prater. You find the largest and most popular Christmas Market on the square in front of Vienna’s City Hall. Here, people in festive mood get anything they crave for: hot wine and punch for adults, pony riding and candied nuts for kids.
Beautiful Christmas time
Another Viennese institution is the Spittelberg Christmas Market. Before Christmas, the narrow streets of this traditional quarter have an especially charming flair about them. It can be crowded though, but people love it there. The Campus of the old AKH hospital in Vienna is another great location for enjoying Advent. Fifty booths offer a mix of culinary specialties, hot drinks, arts and crafts as well as daily live music. And kids love the mini railway!
Back to the roots
Those who prefer the traditional without kitsch should drop by the Old Viennese Christmas Market at Freyung. Also worth visiting - above all because of its marvellous backdrop - is the Culture and Christmas Market in front of Schönbrunn Palace.
