In order to get the Ernst Happel Stadium fit for the European Championship, the Austrian Government and the City of Vienna have invested almost € 37 millions. Austria’s only stadium with a five-star rating will receive video screens as well.

Two additional galleries increase the capacity of the venue of the final match to more than 53,000 seats. However, the lowest tiers will be dismantled again after the EURO in order to create space. The playing field has been equipped with a new heating system - which players will hopefully not need in June. The past few years saw an ever increasing number of VIPs. Therefore, innovations will also include a VIP room accommodating 960 people.

Only the best for visitors

Upon completion of the revamp all wishes will be fulfilled as regards infrastructure and fun. Finally, the Happel Stadium will also receive video screens, which are top-flight according to the Vienna City Council and already standard in all European top stadiums. Seven new food courts on the third gallery are to set new standards in international sports arena catering. And there will be new toilets as well: sanitary facilities made of stainless steel, which - according to the operators - promise a higher level of hygiene.

New infrastructure

In order to offer visitors smooth transport to the stadium, the subway line U2 will be extended to the stadium on May 10, 2008 for the first time. You are recommended to use public transport anyway: While the City of Vienna has been devising a traffic concept for three years, there is still too little parking space near the stadium. Access and departure routes might thus turn into traffic bottlenecks before and after games at Happel Stadium, which are following:
