Panini Hunt
21.01.2008, by Franziska Comments (1)
Before and in the course of the World Cup 2006 in Germany, the MQ, the MuseumsQuartier in Vienna, became the major Panini trading spot. Another run on the stickers is expected during the EURO 2008.
The Panini exchange at Vienna’s MQ is no place for cissies among collectors. Rumour has it that even tough managers had tears in their eyes when failing to get hold of a Totti portrait to make their Panini albums complete. The “I made it”-shouts of joy from another MQ corner just felt like a slap in the face to ambitious collectors. Sadly, they had to leave the crowd, with the intention to try their luck again the following week.
Collectors’ rallying point
During the World Cup 2006 in Germany the Viennese Panini Community got together every Friday afternoon on MQ ground. The Subotron Shop on Electric Avenue was where the sticker mania spawned. From there fanatic collectors soon set out to populate the entire MQ forecourt. Kids (relatively few though), students and tough business guys alike tried their luck there. And even women (the author of this blog among them) were seen there rather often. One got the impression that all Vienna was on a hunt for the small pics.
Ready for the next round?
It remains to be seen whether the hype for Panini stickers will continue during the EURO 2008. The MQ will in any case soon open its doors for Panini addicts again. We will keep you updated.
