Group D: Russia beats Sweden

The preliminary round’s last day saw a Russian victory (2-0) over Sweden in the direct duel and Russia’s first-time rise into the quarter finals. The insignificant parallel encounter between Spain and Greece ended 2-1.

Group C: Italian team saved their necks

The Netherlands also win their third group game against Romania (2-0); Italy, like in the World Cup final, wins over France (2-0) and will encounter Spain in the quarter finals.

Group B: The end of a dream

All hopes are gone: Austria failes beating the Germans. After Ballack’s 1-0 score Germany will head into the quarter finals. Croatia fortifies ambitions for a EURO victory with 1-0 over Poland - it is the only nation so far that scored a maximum of points.

Group A: Turkey defeats the Czech Republic

Only football has such dramas in store! Turkey turned the score against the Czech Republic from 0-2 to 3-2 and rises into the quarter finals. In the meantime Switzerland celebrates its only group victory (2-0) over a Portuguese B-selection.

Group D: Greece unlike a European Champion

Also this year the incumbent European Champion will not be able to defend the title - Greece dropped out after a 0-1 against Russia. By a 2-1 victory over Sweden with a goal in the very last minute David Villa secured Spain’s ticket into the quarter finals.
